April 7, 2016 - Message to Students

Main Content

The university is aware of serious concerns involving racial issues that have occurred in a campus residence hall.  The administration is working to gather information as part of a fair and thorough process. At the conclusion of that investigation the university will take appropriate actions to address any findings.

Meanwhile, it is essential that all members of the university community reflect our core community values of respect for individuals, diversity and inclusion. Anything less diminishes all of us. Free speech is an important right and value. It is also important to use that right wisely and respectfully.

Acts or statements that threaten, intimidate or retaliate against others are unacceptable on our campus or in any community. The safety and well-being of every student is of primary importance. If you feel threatened or at risk, please contact campus police at 911 immediately.

We also remind you that students living in SIU residence halls are accountable for their actions as well as those of their guests. Please take this responsibility seriously.

We have a shared obligation to ensure that SIU is welcoming to all who study and work here. This includes and extends beyond university housing. We will continue to offer diversity dialogues in all of our residence halls so that we can learn from each other and contribute to a healthy living and learning environment. We encourage your participation in future dialogues and welcome all you can do to reflect the positive values of the university in your words and actions.

Sincerely,

Brad Colwell
Interim Chancellor
