Dear Students:
Welcome to the spring semester! There is wonderful energy and enthusiasm on the campus, and I look forward to learning about your many accomplishments in the weeks ahead.
This also is a great time for me to again emphasize that our focus is on your success, both academically and personally. College is hard work, but it should also be fun. A key part of our focus is providing you with a safe and healthy environment to study, to learn, and to enjoy yourselves.
It has come to my attention that on Saturday, January 28th, a few local drinking establishments plan to host large-scale drinking events, particularly “Polar Bear” and “Puck Finch.” We do not condone this type of event. In fact, I am concerned because these events promote high-risk drinking behaviors that are dangerous to you and those around you. We want you to have fun, but this event has resulted in serious consequences for some students and the community.
Last year, these events resulted in almost 100 arrests. More than a dozen people were treated in the local emergency room for intoxication levels that were potentially lethal. SIU Carbondale, Carbondale police and the Illinois Liquor Control Commission will be heavily patrolling the area and issuing citations for underage drinking, public consumption, and of course drunk driving.
In addition, the Student Code of Conduct will be strictly enforced through our Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities. We also will communicate with other colleges and universities if their students receive citations during these events. University Housing will enforce additional restrictions in the residence halls this weekend.
If you plan to attend any of these events, please take the necessary precautions to reduce your potential risk. Limit your alcohol consumption and alternate alcoholic beverages with water or soda. Do not drink on an empty stomach, and please do not drive buzzed or drunk.
The best way to have a good time and be safe is to monitor your own behaviors and to watch out for each other. Salukis take care of each other.
I wish you a great – and safe and healthy – spring semester.
Sincerely,

Rita Cheng
Chancellor
